The St. Stephen Spartans football squad won their home field season opener with a decisive 48-6 score over the École Louis-J.-Robichaud Patriotes (Shediac). With the win, the Spartans even their season record to 1-1 in the provincial 9 Man Football League.
In other action around the league, Harbourview improved their record to league leading 2-0 with a 54-0 win over the James M. Hill Tommies (Miramichi). The Rothesay Redhawks posted and impressive 50-7 score line over the Hampton Huskies.
With Week 2 action wrapped up, it is becoming apparent there are three groups of teams in the 9 Man Football League. Harbourview looks to be the class of the league, with St. Stephen, Rothesay and Simonds battling for the coveted 2nd place. James M. Hill, Hampton and École Louis-J.-Robichaud will battle it out to avoid being in the basement and missing the playoffs.
The Spartans have a bye next Saturday in Week 3 of league action. They will return to the gridiron on Saturday, September 27th at 1 pm to battle the Rothesay Redhawks. Based on Week 1 and 2 scores, this game feels like it could make or break St. Stephen nabbing second place in their division this year.
